Beginner FAQ

Is it okay to join your event if I’m a total beginner?

Is it okay to join your event if I’m a total beginner?

NO!  Okay, just kidding.  We were all beginners once, even Ashima. We have climbers of all levels at every event. You can learn the basics with us or take a class through the gym or you can come the first time and just climb!

How do I start?

How do I start?

You are welcome to come to any indoor event unless it is marked as an advanced event. The first Friday of every month is set aside for total beginners. All you need to do is show up and let us know that you are a beginner and we’ll get you set up with the forms and equipment you need and then set you up with a more experienced climber to show you the ropes. Once you’ve tried it out we can help you arrange a class so that you can learn more!

However, if you want to come and just boulder, you’re welcome to attend any event.

Do I have to join to climb?

Do I have to join to climb?

Nope. You can come and try it out without joining the club. If you like it and want to stick around please sign up as a member. Only members can join us on outdoor trips.

Do I have to have a lot of upper body strength?

Do I have to have a lot of upper body strength?

Not at all! If you can climb a ladder you can rock climb! While popular belief is that you need to be really strong and have a lot of upper body strength to climb, the truth is that you actually don’t. Climbing is more about balance and brains than brawn. When starting out, people who have a lot of upper body strength tend to rely on that while those that don’t will usually learn technique more quickly. People with many different body shapes and levels of fitness can all excel at climbing.

What do I need to wear?

What do I need to wear?

Wear something that you are comfortable in and can move around in. Think yoga or workout clothes. If you’re more comfortable wearing a pair of skinny jeans, then by all means rock on! (see what we did there?)

What do I need to bring?

What do I need to bring?

All of the equipment you need can be rented at the gym. If you are climbing at Brooklyn Boulders at a CRUX event the gear is included in the price – so just bring yourself!

How will I find everyone at an event?

How will I find everyone at an event?

At indoor events, an event leader will usually be waiting inside the front door from about 10 minutes before the start time until about 15 past the start time. Look for someone with a CRUX t-shirt and/or name tag. If you get there late and an event leader is not there just ask at the front counter – they will be able to tell you where to go.

That. Was. AWESOME! Where do I buy my gear?

That. Was. AWESOME! Where do I buy my gear?

We are lucky to have several EMS stores right in downtown Manhattan. EMS a huge selection of climbing gear and a super helpful staff who will make sure you get fitted right. The store has a mini climbing wall that you can try the gear out on so you can see how it will feel when climbing. We also have discount coupons – ask us at an event and we’ll be happy to give them to you!

I climbed at summer camp; am I still a beginner?

I climbed at summer camp; am I still a beginner?

You are classified as a beginner if you don’t know how to belay. Belaying is controlling the ropes while your partner climbs up the wall. If you know how to belay, you can come to any event and jump in and start climbing. If you don’t know how to belay you need someone to do that for you. We are happy to belay for you on your first visit so you can try it out and then we’ll get you set up with a lesson. We also host events at Manhattan Plaza Health Club where you can take group lessons with CRUX for a discounted rate. Be sure to check the Events Calendar for the  next trip to MPHC.

How soon can I climb outside?

How soon can I climb outside?

As soon as you can belay and have your own gear, you are able to head outside. Our outdoor trips are for CRUX members so when you know that you love the sport and the club just sign up and we’ll let you know whenever we are heading outside!

I’m afraid of heights; should I find something else?

I’m afraid of heights; should I find something else?

Here’s a secret: several of the best climbers in CRUX were, and still are, leery of heights. Just like any physical activity, there is some inherent risk involved. However, before anyone is allowed to belay a climber (the skill necessary to control the rope, and prevent a fall to the ground) they must be certified. When we climb at any of our partner gyms, gym staff and CRUX members will keep an eye out for safety concerns. For outdoor climbs, CRUX members and more advanced climbers serve that role.

If you want to climb, but are truly concerned about the height, then perhaps bouldering is for you. Bouldering typically takes place on a lower wall in the gym, and has extra cushion for your fall since there are no ropes to stop your fall.
